As part of its commitment to the community, The Royal Latin School is staging its ‘Extraordinary People Awards’ again in 2025. The 2025 awards will seek to reflect the Royal Latin values and virtues and aim to recognise those in our community who have demonstrated extraordinary qualities in their efforts to overcome challenges and help others. Nominations open from 28th April and recipients will be chosen by a panel of judges from our community. Nominations from the school and members of the local community are invited for the following awards:
The Royal Latin Extraordinary People Award for Leadership and Integrity
We’re looking for someone who is a strong leader and guides others through integrity, fairness and a commitment to doing what is right. They are a strong communicator, lead by example, are happy to help others and inspire trust and respect through their actions.The person who wins this award will be someone who stands out in their community because of their leadership. What they have done should have made a difference for people beyond their immediate sphere of influence; it’s more than just doing a job well.
For example:
♦ It might be someone who has stood up for something that they believe to be right – against opposition
♦ Someone who has mentored or supported a younger person to achieve highly
♦ Someone who has started fundraising or another activity to support others
Previous winners of this award include community first responder, Richard Watkins in 2024 and teacher, Penny Mason, in 2023.
The Royal Latin Extraordinary People Award for Resilience and Aspiration
We’re looking for someone who aims high, dreams big and keeps going despite setbacks. They face challenges with determination and a positive attitude, staying focused on their goals, willing to help others and aspire to create change in their community. The person who receives this award will be someone whose determination is inspiring to others. They do not have to have achieved highly, but they do have to have tried persistently despite knock-backs.
For example:
♦ They might have overcome injury or disability in the course of their efforts, or dealt courageously with disadvantage
♦ They could be someone who is aiming high to achieve change in their community
Previous winners of this award include community event fundraisers, Alex and Laura Penny in 2024 and RLS parent volunteer, Mike Spencer-Jones, in 2023.
The Royal Latin Extraordinary People Award for Teamwork and Respect
We are looking for someone or a small team of people who work well with others, value collaboration and are strong communicators. They show respect for everyone, listen and contribute to creating an inclusive, supportive and effective team environment. The person or group who receives this award will be part of a team that has brought about substantial good to the community.
For example:
♦ They will have worked together with others in a way which fosters strong bonds and shows respect for all people of every kind
♦ They might have a strong focus on communication, or on social justice and fairness, and are likely to focus on the impact of wellbeing for all their team
Previous winners of this award include Nursery Manager Elly Kenealy in 2024 and Scout Association volunteers, Rosemary and Peter Frohock, in 2023.
The Royal Latin Extraordinary People Award for Innovation and Courage
The person who wins this award will be someone who has the courage to make big changes. They will have implemented new ways of working or new ways of thinking about a problem, and their innovations will have had a real impact on others.
For example:
♦ They might have invented something, or tried a new approach towards an old problem; their courage will shine through in what they have done
Previous winners of this award include junior charity fundraiser, Finley Shuddell, in 2024 and astronomer, Ross Hockham, in 2023.
The Royal Latin Extraordinary People Award for Compassion and Nurturing
We are looking for someone who demonstrates extraordinary compassion for their fellow humans or the natural world. Nominees will show kindness and empathy towards others, offering support and encouragement, creating a caring environment where people feel valued and understood. They may put their efforts into nurturing nature, or caring for the world around them. This person dedicates their time to nurturing important life skills in others, helping others to give their best to support their fellow humans or the natural world. They will be supportive and encouraging, and have a wider impact than just their job or personal life, in creating an environment for others to flourish.The person who receives this award will be someone whose kindness stands out from the crowd.
For example:
♦ They could focus on the environment, or on others who are disadvantaged in some way
♦ They might support those with additional needs and are likely to be quiet about the impact that they have: others will notice what they do
Previous winners of this award include community volunteer, Sheila Handley, in 2024 and as Royal British Legion volunteer, Peter McNiven Hay, in 2023.
Awards Nominations
Please forward your nominations along with any supporting evidence, by completing and submitting the nomination form between 28th April and 3rd June 2025.
Awards Presentation
Award recipients will be invited to receive their awards from the Headteacher in the presence of invited guests at a presentation ceremony on 8th October 2025. Winners will be presented with an award, a certificate, and opportunities to share their story with students and for the cause of their choice to receive support from the school via a non-uniform day in 2025-26.
Judging Panel
The judging panel will consist of a member of the school’s senior management team, and at least one senior community volunteer.
8th May 2025: Nominations open
10th June 2025: Nominations close; nominations received after this date cannot be considered
11th-18th June 2025: judging panel to review nominations
w/c 23rd June 2025: winning recipients to be notified and confirm award acceptance/ceremony attendance; award sponsors to be notified of the winner in their category. Winners to submit and approve paragraph for entry onto school website in autumn term
8th October 2025: Awards presentation to take place
9th October 2025: Award recipients to be announced in post-event press release in school communications/social media

Nominations must be made in good faith. Nominations of any age are eligible. In the event that a recipient declines to accept the award, the award will be offered to the next highest scoring nomination on the shortlist. By accepting an award, nominees agree to their name and image being shared publicly. All information submitted in nominations will be treated in confidence; final approval will be sought from recipients prior to any details being made public.
