Royal Latin Extraordinary People Awards 2023

As part of its commitment to the community, The Royal Latin School held its inaugural ‘Extraordinary People Awards’ at the 600th anniversary Gold Gala Ball on 30th September 2023. The awards sought to reflect the Royal Latin values and virtues and aimed to recognise those in our community who have demonstrated extraordinary qualities in their efforts to overcome challenges and help others. Recipients were chosen by a panel of judges from our community.  

 The glittering ceremony was hosted by Headteacher David Hudson and Chair of Governors Phil Dart, with sponsors and special guests being invited on to stage to present each recipient with their award. Gala ball guests were treated to a brief film about each recipient, to share the work they do to encourage and support those in their community. Congratulations to all of the deserving winners, listed below, and huge thanks to the sponsors who made the awards possible:

Penny Mason, a teacher at the school, was presented with the Award for Leadership in recognition of her enduring, passionate leadership of the school’s Green Touch student environmental group. Penny inspires students to care passionately about their environment both locally and globally, and encourages them to take positive action to do what they can to inspire others and to make improvements to their environment. Congratulations, Penny, and thank you to ek robotics for sponsoring this important award.

Mike Spencer-Jones is the winner of the Award for Resilience in recognition of his boundless resilience and energy in staging the successful Run the Claydons fundraising event over many years. Mike has faced many challenges in organising the event, but remained steadfast in his certainty that Run the Claydons is an important event not only as a means of raising funds, but as a mechanism to inspire local people of all ages to have a go at running or just to be more active. The event has grown in size over the years and is always enjoyed enormously by everyone taking part. Congratulations, Mike, and thank you to Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team for sponsoring this award.

Peter and Rosemary Frohock with their award, presented by HSO's IMU Director, Matt Birtwistle

Rosemary and Peter Frohock were presented with the Award  for Teamwork, for epitomising team spirit through their involvement in the Scouts Association in Buckingham over many years. The couple have invested all of their energies in helping to develop the lives of so many young people for the better, teaching them new skills and offering them new experiencess through the Scounting movement. Congratulations, Rosemary and Peter, and thank you to HSO for kindly sponsoring this award.

Ross Hockham with his award, presented by Julian Thomas, Managing Director of Racelogic

Ross Hockham was presented with the Award for Innovation in recognition of his inspirational work to set up and grow his charity UK Astronomy, helping to bring the wonders of the night skies to communities far and wide. The judging panel was so impressed with all of the work Ross has put into building a large following, and the ways in which he has had to innovate – including creating his mobile astronomy van – in order to teach people of all ages about astronomy. Congratulations, Ross, and thank you to Racelogic for sponsoring this award.

The Award for Nurturing was presented to Peter McNiven Hay,  in recognition of his lifelong service and care and concern for others in his community through his long involvement with the Royal British Legion. Peter, a former RAF Squadron Leader, is a shining example to us all to get out there and help others in our community, and received a spontaneous and moving standing ovation at the awards ceremony. Huge congratulations, Peter, and thank you to Old Latin Denise Griffiths for kindly sponsoring this award.
